The Goddess of Feminine Strength
An exclusive by Riddhima Sen
Goddess Durga is an integral part of Bengali culture. She represents the strength and integrity of every Bengali woman, and every woman indeed. Her ten hands are an insignia of the power of multi-tasking that women are generally endowed with. When a woman becomes a mother, she has to take care of her children, husband and in laws and complete all the household chores in time as well. In addition to this, if she is a working woman, she has to work way harder and tirelessly. This unpaid labour often goes unnoticed, and is treated as a woman’s filial duty.
Feminism is not a mere term. It is an offshoot of the Suffragette Movement. The Suffragette Movement was a protest against the unequal rights women were confined to. Women were not allowed to vote, and their seats were reserved on buses. This situation bore fruit when women finally got their voting rights, which is a basic human right at the end of the day. In contemporary times, women have obviously witnessed a lot of improvement and can fend for themselves. However, there are certain unresolved issues. Daily news of women getting assaulted is extremely common. When every woman finds the Goddess Durga within herself, finally, there will be equality and the ideal of human rights will be upheld truly.
